Who are you and what do you do?

Hi, my name is Jon and I’m a trainee driving instructor with Caledonian DT. I offer lessons in a manual car in Shieldhall, Govan, Cardonald, Ralston, Pollock and surrounding areas. I’ve always loved cars, machinery and driving and hope to pass on not just my knowledge but passion for all things automotive.

Since passing my test almost a lifetime ago, I’ve driven all sorts of vehicles in many different environments. Highlights include a motorcycle across Europe, a rally car round a closed circuit, a steam road roller. I even had a pupil whose ambition was to drive to Outer Mongolia and it all started with a weekly lesson with an enthusiastic instructor!

What is the best advice you could give your learners?

While some instructors might say it’s important to study and practice between lessons, and they’re correct, I like to think about the big picture. Getting your licence isn’t the end, it’s just the start of what could be an amazing adventure. 

What do you like to do when you're not working?

As you can see from my answers, my passion is all things automotive. Recently, I’ve got back into grass roots motorsport and have taken my daughter along as well. It isn’t high stakes but she did win a Chocolate Orange last time out! I also enjoy fishing with my son and as a family we have days out in my classic car, usually to a local show.

One interesting fact about you...

I still own the same make and model of car I did when I learned to drive 35 years ago.
