Automatic Driving Lessons in Edinburgh & Midlothian with James

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is James Cornwall and I’m based in Dalkeith, Edinburgh. I’m currently training to become an automatic driving instructor with Caledonian Driver Training.

I’d say I’m calm, patient, easy-going, and very approachable. I like people to feel relaxed when they’re learning with me, because I know driving can feel a bit overwhelming at first. I’m always up for a laugh and I want lessons to feel enjoyable, but I also take the responsibility of teaching someone to drive properly and safely very seriously.

Everyone learns differently, so I try to adapt my style to suit the learner rather than expecting every pupil to learn the same way.

Before this, I worked in banking for six years. I enjoyed parts of it, but I wanted to move into a career that suited my lifestyle better and gave me the chance to do something more rewarding.

I’ve always been into cars and driving, so becoming a driving instructor felt like a good fit for me. I also like the idea of helping someone work towards a goal that can make a real difference to their life. Being able to help a learner go from feeling unsure or nervous to becoming a confident, safe driver is a big part of why I chose this career.

The work-life balance was another big factor for me, but the main thing was wanting to do something where I could actually see the difference I was making.

"I chose Caledonian because of the amount of positive reviews I’d seen and the reputation they have. What stood out to me was that they don’t just focus on teaching people to pass a test. Their approach is about helping learners become safe drivers for life, which I think is really important. That way of thinking really appealed to me. Passing the test matters, of course, but I think the bigger goal should be giving learners the confidence and skills to drive safely long after test day. Their resources, courses, and support have also been brilliant throughout my training."

What is the best thing about being a driving instructor?

For me, one of the best parts is seeing someone make progress during a lesson. Even if it’s just one skill we’ve been working on, seeing it start to click for someone is a great feeling.

I’m really looking forward to the day one of my students passes their test for the first time, as I think that will be a very proud moment.

I’m also a big people person, so I enjoy meeting different learners, getting to know them, and understanding what works best for each individual.

What is the best advice you could give your learners?

My best advice would be not to rush the process. Everyone learns at their own pace, and that’s completely normal.

I’d always encourage learners to take ownership of their lessons, ask questions, and think about what they want to improve on. I also think it helps when pupils are honest about how they’re feeling in the car, whether they’re nervous, unsure, or just not quite getting something yet. That makes it much easier to work through things properly and get the most out of each lesson.

What do you like to do when you're not working?

Outside of work, I’m usually playing golf, watching football, or spending time outdoors. I enjoy getting out in nature when I can.

I’m also a bit of a geek when it comes to Xbox and Pokémon cards, so I’ve got a good mix of hobbies between being outdoors and switching off properly at home.

One interesting fact about you...

One interesting fact about me is that my uncle is the drummer for Biffy Clyro — which tends to be a good conversation starter.

"I have been doing lessons with James for a number of months now after doing around 20 hours with other instructors I can confidently say James has been the best by far. When I first came to James I had issues with speed and had no confidence on roundabouts and parking now those issues don’t exist and I feel so much more comfortable behind the wheel and I am on track to passing my test in the near future would highly recommend to anyone looking to get on the road themselves!"
